Handler was born in Livingston, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Ridgefield Park. Her mother, Rita (née Stoecker), is a Jewish American former nurse and housewife, and her father, Seymour Handler, is a Jewish American former electrical engineer. Her father died of cancer when Chelsea was nine.
Handler has a brother, Chet. Handler has stated that she was a “shy, artsy kid” who was “a bit of a loner” in high school. She began her career as a comedian after moving to Los Angeles in the early 1990s. In 2004, she won the Best Female Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. Handler’s first regular television role was on the sketch comedy show, “The Chelsea Handler Show”, which ran for two seasons on E! from 2007 to 2009. In 2007, she released her first book, “My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands”. In 2010, Handler created and starred in her own late-night talk show, “Chelsea Lately”, on the E! network.
The show ended its seven-year run on August 26, 2014. Handler has also hosted the Academy Awards red carpet show, the 2010 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
